The "Off Season"

What happens when we are not doing summer camp? Well, here's what's been going on since our summer camp season ended.

Much of the first week after camp ended consisted of reorganizing and putting summer camp items away to be stored for the winter. Also, being gone for much of the summer has left a lot of the work on the grounds undone. So, the lawn and the gardens were attended to, which also meant so were the lawn mowers that needed repairing.

The following week, the interns along with Tony & Karol & Anthony headed to MN to help run a sister camp for a week.

The Burys headed to MT to celebrate Marceaux's parents' 50th wedding anniversary. While they were there, they had the opportunity to speak at the a chapel service at Montana Bible College about Camp Daniel and the value of people with disabilities.

We hosted a local church picnic and service, hosted a pastor's retreat, and hosted a meeting for Marinette County Harvesters.

Trish and the Burys started their fall season volunteering with Marinette County Special Olympics.
Here, Trish is helping a bowler in the ramp bowling league.

They have also been helping with an ecumenical bible class for adults with disabilities that meets at Zion Lutheran every 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6:30pm.

Then, the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Mondays of the month, they have The Able Gathering game night held at Abundant Joy Gifts on Main Street in Marinette.

Pastor Tim and Marceaux have been busy working on lawn mowers, gulf carts, and vehicles.

Pastor Tim continues to faithfully pastor The Able Church in Green Bay, daily investing in the lives of people with disabilities in the Green Bay area.

Starting October 1st, Pastor Tim will be starting a weekly service on Thursday nights at 6pm in Oconto at Woodland Village Nursing Center, 101 First Street.

The "Off Season" is filled with workdays, some formal and many informal. It takes a lot of work and planning simply to prepare for the jobs on a given work day and Tony & Karol spend much time preparing for them.

Mechanical people worked on gulf carts and other equipment needing fixing.

Sod was laid, along with other landscaping projects.

Tony & Karol have been spending many, many hours working on the lighting plan for the basement of the Barn - the future home of the auto shop, wood shop, and storage. Volunteers helped install casings for electrical outlets.

Upcoming workdays include: Oct 3rd, Oct 16 (Friday), & Nov 14th. 8am-4pm, lunch provided. RSVP to info@campdaniel.org. Or come any day and work....

Tony and the guys have spent many hours working on this beautiful shed to be used for shovels, mowers, and other landscaping equipment. Karol has been painting and detailing it to look weathered and barn-like.

Who would put so much time and detail into a simple garden shed? People that value people with disabilities and want to communicate that they are worth it!

Tony & Karol spend many hours managing the affairs of the Hartley House and daily investing in the lives of guys that live there.

The guys and Chalsee help with all the many projects going on at camp daily. They are also involved with The Able Church and Special Olympics.

Trish continues to manage the gardens and lawn care. Trish & Karol have been transplanting flowers and bushes. Jen has been pruning the flowers that are done for the season. Jen is working on a time line for the history of Camp Daniel. She is also working on our fairly new data base with the help of Anthony (who is the brains behind it all), preparing for the mailing of our newsletter that Karol has been working on. Trish also continues to prepare meals when we have groups come in, as well as, manage the Brunot House.

Betty, our intern, started classes again at UWGB. She helps out where she can in-between classes and homework. She will be moving at the end of next month to Green Bay, where she will continue to be involved with The Able Church.

Papa Tony continually and faithfully works in the office daily, managing all the business side of things. We are so grateful for all his hard work. Without him, none of what we do would be possible. He is constantly caring for the grounds, too. He keeps a large garbage can in his gulf cart at all times to pick up brush and any garbage. Grandma Jo also is attending to flowers and doing what she can to make Camp Daniel look nice.

So, it may be called "The Off Season", but we are just as busy, if not more, than our summer camp season. If you'd like to come help, just let us know, and we'd love to have you come along side us and help with whatever you can!
