The "Off Season"

What happens when we are not doing summer camp? Well, here's what's been going on since our summer camp season ended.

Much of the first week after camp ended consisted of reorganizing and putting summer camp items away to be stored for the winter. Also, being gone for much of the summer has left a lot of the work on the grounds undone. So, the lawn and the gardens were attended to, which also meant so were the lawn mowers that needed repairing.

The following week, the interns along with Tony & Karol & Anthony headed to MN to help run a sister camp for a week.

The Burys headed to MT to celebrate Marceaux's parents' 50th wedding anniversary. While they were there, they had the opportunity to speak at the a chapel service at Montana Bible College about Camp Daniel and the value of people with disabilities.

We hosted a local church picnic and service, hosted a pastor's retreat, and hosted a meeting for Marinette County Harvesters.

Trish and the Burys started their fall season volunteering with Marinette County Special Olympics.
Here, Trish is helping a bowler in the ramp bowling league.

They have also been helping with an ecumenical bible class for adults with disabilities that meets at Zion Lutheran every 1st and 3rd Mondays at 6:30pm.

Then, the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Mondays of the month, they have The Able Gathering game night held at Abundant Joy Gifts on Main Street in Marinette.

Pastor Tim and Marceaux have been busy working on lawn mowers, gulf carts, and vehicles.

Pastor Tim continues to faithfully pastor The Able Church in Green Bay, daily investing in the lives of people with disabilities in the Green Bay area.

Starting October 1st, Pastor Tim will be starting a weekly service on Thursday nights at 6pm in Oconto at Woodland Village Nursing Center, 101 First Street.

The "Off Season" is filled with workdays, some formal and many informal. It takes a lot of work and planning simply to prepare for the jobs on a given work day and Tony & Karol spend much time preparing for them.

Mechanical people worked on gulf carts and other equipment needing fixing.

Sod was laid, along with other landscaping projects.

Tony & Karol have been spending many, many hours working on the lighting plan for the basement of the Barn - the future home of the auto shop, wood shop, and storage. Volunteers helped install casings for electrical outlets.

Upcoming workdays include: Oct 3rd, Oct 16 (Friday), & Nov 14th. 8am-4pm, lunch provided. RSVP to info@campdaniel.org. Or come any day and work....

Tony and the guys have spent many hours working on this beautiful shed to be used for shovels, mowers, and other landscaping equipment. Karol has been painting and detailing it to look weathered and barn-like.

Who would put so much time and detail into a simple garden shed? People that value people with disabilities and want to communicate that they are worth it!

Tony & Karol spend many hours managing the affairs of the Hartley House and daily investing in the lives of guys that live there.

The guys and Chalsee help with all the many projects going on at camp daily. They are also involved with The Able Church and Special Olympics.

Trish continues to manage the gardens and lawn care. Trish & Karol have been transplanting flowers and bushes. Jen has been pruning the flowers that are done for the season. Jen is working on a time line for the history of Camp Daniel. She is also working on our fairly new data base with the help of Anthony (who is the brains behind it all), preparing for the mailing of our newsletter that Karol has been working on. Trish also continues to prepare meals when we have groups come in, as well as, manage the Brunot House.

Betty, our intern, started classes again at UWGB. She helps out where she can in-between classes and homework. She will be moving at the end of next month to Green Bay, where she will continue to be involved with The Able Church.

Papa Tony continually and faithfully works in the office daily, managing all the business side of things. We are so grateful for all his hard work. Without him, none of what we do would be possible. He is constantly caring for the grounds, too. He keeps a large garbage can in his gulf cart at all times to pick up brush and any garbage. Grandma Jo also is attending to flowers and doing what she can to make Camp Daniel look nice.

So, it may be called "The Off Season", but we are just as busy, if not more, than our summer camp season. If you'd like to come help, just let us know, and we'd love to have you come along side us and help with whatever you can!

Pouring the Floor!

Tuesday, the cement trucks pulled up and started pouring the basement of the Barn! The basement level includes an auto garage, wood shop, tool room, and storage!

Once the floor is complete, we can start the interior work of these rooms and start using the storage space. This will allow us start moving items from the existing garage to the new one; thus, allowing us to continue the conversion of the existing garage into the dining hall.

Lots of work to be done and we could use your help!!!

Joins us for the upcoming work days!

Sept 19th, Oct 3rd, & Nov 14th.  8am - 4pm, Lunch provided. Please RSVP to info@campdaniel.org or call 715-757-3880.

We could also use lots of help during the week.  Wednesdays thru Fridays would be full work days. Come by yourself or form a crew. Welcome to stay in the lodge if you want to come for multiple days! Just let us know when you can come!

Many people ask when will camp be done. The more help we get, the sooner it will be!

Camp Daniel 2015 Journey

Another great summer camp season has come and gone! Each week we had about 50 campers, so we were able to serve roughly 200 children and adults with disabilities over the whole summer! In order to serve the campers, we had 80-100 volunteers each week, totaling roughly 400 volunteers for the summer.

In the following, we'd like to take you on a little journey recapping the summer and highlighting some of the new things on camp.

This year's camp theme was JOURNEY. We learned how to "Journey God's way" together as a community. One of our volunteers pointed out that in the word "Journey" is the word "Our" and we learned to journey this life together, not alone.

Every year, we pick out a movie for our outdoor movie night that goes with the camp theme. This year's movie was Disney's UP, which follows a life's journey of a young boy and an elderly man.

This theme was carried over into The Able Hour (the morning chapel) with Pastor Tim. Pastor Tim used Pastor John as a character from the movie UP, and we followed his journey with God throughout the week.

The Chapel was decorated with a mountaineering theme, rock climbers on a journey up a mountain.

This was our second year implementing the Intern Program. This year we had 8 interns for an 8 week commitment. They came a week before camp started to prepare, 2 weeks of camp, helped serve during the week off of camp, 2 more weeks of camp, and then helped the week after camp putting everything away for storage in the off season. Their 8th week, they went to help serve a a sister camp in MN.

Interns from Lft to Rt: Evan, Betty, Hannah, Annissa, Caleb, Ruth, Katie, and Amanda.

The interns played a big part of what went on during summer camp. They were in charge of Rec Games, they were cabin leaders, some were counselors various weeks, and help with many behind the scenes responsibilities.

On Lumberjack day, they led Lumberjack Rec Games, new to this year. Here the interns from the red team are taking on the interns from the blue team in a tug-of-war match.

Here Lumberjack Evan is officiating the sausage eating contest. The campers had to lead their counselors blindfolded to the hanging sausage link for them to eat.

The Carnival Trailer has been a great and needed addition! It was an old pop-up camper that was stripped down to its base frame and the trailer you see here was built. Not only is the trailer great for storage of carnival and the rec games, it adds to the carnival feel we strive hard to make.

Karol made some beautiful display boxes for the carnival prizes, adding to that authentic carnival atmosphere!

And what more can add to the feel of a carnival than this concession cart for popcorn!

And.... what is a carnival without balloons and a clown?

Also new this year was some soft, fluffy animals to pet. One of our volunteers brought an angora rabbit and silkie chickens.

Another exciting highlight of the summer was when Fox 11 News came to run a story on Al Zielinski and his faithful service to us for over 10 years. Al would bring his 1958 Chevy to camp on our 50's night. Al would take the winners of the twist contest for a ride in his car to the local ice cream shop. Here's the news clip. http://fox11online.com/news/local/northwoods/crivitz-man-remembered-for-special-car-rides-at-summer-camp

Hands down, the new shuttle and shuttle service has been one of the best additions to this summer!
With a spread out campus and gravel paths in some areas, it can be hard for campers to get from one place to another. The shuttle also came in very handy for hauling luggage when campers arrived and packed up.

Here is one of the shuttle stops, with the shuttle, hand made by Camp Daniel, in the background. The shuttle held 4-6 people.

Here is shuttle taxi driver, Dale.
And here is shuttle taxi driver, Tim.

Besides our counselors, there were many volunteers working behind the scenes with cleaning the bathrooms and dining hall, doing dishes, setting up activities, working in the kitchen and running activities during free time. These work groups came from church youth groups, as well as, other church groups and organizations.

Many campers and volunteers furthered their journey with God during camp, and some started their journey with God for the first time!

Thank you to all our volunteers that helped make this year's Journey possible!

St. Paul's Mission's Trip to Camp Daniel

St. Paul's Lutheran Church from Sheboygan Falls sent a mission's team to serve 4 days. There were a lot of different tasks to fit a variety of different skill levels.  It was a great time for church members to grow closer together as a church, as well as, in their personal families. It was also a good opportunity for them to learn more about Camp Daniel and experience the value of people with disabilities.

It was very exciting to see the siding for the barn go up!

The fitness center and foyer in the barn was primed and painted.

Patches were sewn on aprons for Carnival Day!
This is Amanda, she is going to be one of our summer interns this year!

Several of the gals spent many hours peeling vinyl lettering for T-shirts. Some of the gals also made about 600 cupcakes for summer camp!

Several of the guys built our newest trailer - The Carnival Trailer! It will house all the carnival games and decorations and be able to readily move from camp here to summer camp in Wausaukee.

Here it is finished, yet to be painted and decorated to fit the carnival theme.
The kids had several fun jobs including tearing out old pages from the counselor manual. They also cleaned fish tanks for the nature center, weeded the nature trail, and helped where they could.

Thank you St. Paul's Lutheran Church for all your hard work! We are very grateful!

If you would like your church or organization to come serve at Camp Daniel, we would love to set up a trip for you! Contact info@campdaniel.org or 715-757-3880.

Busy Time of Year!

This recent busy round of events started the last weekend of May with a Girl Scout Retreat that we hosted here at camp. The weekend provided a great mother-daughter time with fun activities, including a tea party and group games. The weekend also served as a service project for the troop as they did some spring cleaning and helped with projects for camp.

The following weekend marked our 6th annual Dance 4 Disability (D4D) held at the Grand Pavilion at Bay Beach in Green Bay. It was a great success with close to 300 in attendance.

This event brings together people with disabilities, along with many organizations, families and caregivers, to celebrate the disability community.

After the dance, the Burys hit the road for Muskegon, MI to serve a week at Joni & Friends Family Retreats. Jen started her first connection with disability ministry 11 years ago with Joni & Friends Retreats.

JAF Retreats are a lot like Camp Daniel with themes and costumes. The theme this year was "All Things Are Possible", using The Mission Impossible motif. The Burys used their Unbelieveable costumes from Camp Daniel's Trust theme.

JAF Retreats are unique in that the entire family with someone with a disability attends. There are opportunities for mom's to get together, dads, and siblings. When Camp Daniel's grounds are complete, we will be able host family camps!

Then this past weekend, Annissa and Ruth had their graduation party here at Camp. It was also a party for Anthony, as he graduated from the 8th grade.

Annissa will be attending Madison Area Technical College for Event Planning and Ruth will be attending UW La Crosse for Recreational Management.
Anthony will be attending Crivitz High School. :-)

Thanks to all those who helped with and/or attended all these events!
